Multan, the city of saints.
Multan, the city of saints is one of the oldest living cities of Pakistan. The city has a rich cultural and religious heritage which dates back to the bronze age.
Current day city is a beautiful merger of old and modern architecture. The old city is walled with congested streets and ancient buildings. There are many tombs and shrines, each related to a sufi or saint or "peer" as the locals call them. Each year there is a congregation of the followers of different peers, known as "urs". People pay tribute to them for devoting their life to preaching Islam my taking a day out of their life and visiting their shrines. It is a common practice among many locals.
The city itself is located near one of the five rivers of Pakistan, known as Chenab. The land is very fertile and agriculture is the main source of income for the locals. Wheat and cotton are two of the mostly cultivated crops along with mangoes which are considered to be the best in the world. Mango is also the main export of Multan. The area has an extensive network of canals to cater the agricultural needs.
City experiences extreme weather through out the year with temperatures soaring to 50°C in summers and dropping almost to the freezing point in winters. Area experiences normal amount of rainfall with abundant strong dusty thunderstorms through out rhe summers.
Locals are simple and hospitable people who are always ready to help you out if you are a tourist visiting Multan.
Although the tourism industry is not very well developed in Multan, yet their are many place worth visiting including the famous shrines and the local markets where one can find tremendous pieces of blue pottery and some stunning embroidered clothes. Apart from this you may find some shopping malls and nice eating places too. International fast-food giants like kfc, sub way and pizza hut have also found their way to this ancient city.
The city has an extensive network of roads which is being further developed with many intracity flyovers and connecting bypasses to the main highways of the country.
