Dust Storms
Multan is popular for the frequent dust storms it enjoys during the summer season. They usually follow a very hot day and make the weather a lot pleasent.
The phenomenon involved is rising of the hot air due to extreme heat. The cooler air from nearby then rushes in to fill the vaccume produced.
The sight of the rising black dusty cloud is really refreshing after a very hot summer day. It usually brings along a drop in the temperature and cooler winds which are a big relief for the people of Multan. But no good thing comes without a price. The mango cultivators are severely effected as the strong winds are very dangerous for the unripe mangoes, still hanging on the tree's branches. Also it is due to these dust storms that many hypersensitive people find it difficult to live in Multan. The dust alone is adequate to trigger an asthma attack which can be fatal. Use of mask and staying indoor during any such dust storm is strongly recommended for such people.
Sometimes the wind is so strong that it uproots many trees and advertisement billboards consequently leading to broken power cables and hours of power outages. Many birds are also seen lying on the roads, dead, after such strong dust storms. During these more powerful dust storms or you may call them 'super storms', usually the sky turns to a reddish colour and according to a popular local belief/myth, it is the sign that an innocent person has been murdered somewhere nearby.
In short, these dust storms provide the people of Multan with a rare relief from an otherwise hot and humid summer season.
